Below are some ways spiritual bypassing can show up, including subtle patterns where we may avoid facing reality:
- Dismissing emotional pain by telling yourself it doesn’t matter or isn’t real because “there is no self.”
- Trying to act compassionate when you are actually feeling anger, sadness, fear, resentment, or hurt.
- Believing you should feel a certain way as a “spiritual” person, and criticizing yourself when your real emotions don’t match that expectation.
- Avoiding everyday responsibilities—such as work, finances, health, relationships, or difficult conversations—by focusing only on spiritual practices.
- Overlooking unhealthy or unhelpful behavior in relationships because you assume you are too aware or evolved to experience conflict.
- Choosing meditation or spiritual activities instead of responding to someone who needs help or attending to real-world obligations.
- Rejecting or suppressing parts of yourself that don’t seem spiritual, calm, kind, or mindful.
